Overview

uPVC Double Glazing — the honest version

What it is

uPVC double glazing is our most-installed window system: two panes of energy-efficient glass sealed with a warm-edge spacer inside a multi-chambered uPVC frame. We fit Eurocell and Spectus profiles in white, cream, grey, black and full woodgrain finishes, with A-rated glass as standard.

Who it's for

Homeowners in older single-glazed properties, 1980s and 1990s uPVC replacements that have blown or discoloured, and landlords bringing rental EPCs up to standard. Suits every style from Victorian bays to modern semis.

When to book it

Book a survey if you see condensation between panes, feel a draft near the frame, hear road noise clearly through the glass, or your heating bills have crept up year on year. Frames older than 20 years usually justify replacement outright.

Why it matters who fits it

Cheap trade fits often skip the details that decide how long a window lasts — packers, low-modulus silicone, correct drainage and internal beading. We fit every job ourselves and register the guarantee with Assure so it survives the sale of the house.

What Goes Wrong

What happens if you leave it — and what most people get wrong

A tired window is rarely just cosmetic. Once seals fail, moisture and cold air have a way in — and the damage spreads.

The Risks
  • Blown units let humid air condense between panes, then mould creeps into reveals and plaster.
  • Failed gaskets and hinges drop U-values from ~1.2 to over 2.5 W/m²K — you're heating the street.
  • Rotten timber sills and cracked uPVC frames let water track behind the reveal, softening the wall.
  • Old locks and single-point catches are the first thing an opportunist tests during a break-in.
Common Mistakes
  • Choosing the cheapest quote without checking the profile system or glass spec.
  • Fitting new sashes into rotten frames instead of replacing the full unit.
  • Skipping trickle vents — Building Regs Part F now requires background ventilation on most replacements.
  • Assuming any 'A-rated' window is the same. The frame, spacer bar and gas fill all matter.

Once approved, we place the order with our trade suppliers. Standard windows and doors run ~3 weeks, bespoke items 4–5 weeks. Stock composite doors 7–10 days.

Our own installers fit every job. Frames set square and plumb, sealed with low-modulus silicone and expanding foam, internal beading, no drafts or gaps.

05

Testing & Handover

Every window and door is tested for operation, locking and seal. Site left clean, old frames removed, care advice given, guarantees registered with Assure.

Benefits

What you actually get — not marketing talk

Lower Heating Bills

A-rated glass with argon fill and warm-edge spacers cuts heat loss significantly against old double glazing and dramatically against single glazing.

Quieter Rooms

Sealed 28mm units dampen road, rail and neighbour noise — noticeable from the first night.

Real Security

Multi-point espagnolette locking, internally beaded units and Yale Encloser or Hoppe handles as standard.

20+ Year Lifespan

Eurocell and Spectus frames are BS 7412 kitemarked and hold colour and shape for decades with almost no maintenance.

Insurance-Backed Guarantee

Every install is registered with Assure — the paperwork survives us and transfers with the property.

Clean Finish, Clean Site

Internal beading, tidy silicone lines, dust sheets down, old frames taken away — you don't chase us for snags.

The Detail

How we spec & fit upvc double glazing

Not all uPVC windows are the same. The frame system, glass spec and installation detail together decide performance, security and how the window looks in ten years.

Materials & systems

Eurocell Profile Systems

Modus and Logik ranges. Fully recyclable, multi-chambered for thermal efficiency, available in white, cream, grey, black, chartwell green and 20+ woodgrain foils.

Spectus Profile

British-made 70mm and 75mm systems. Chosen where slim sightlines and heavy sash weights matter — heritage-style casements and larger apertures.

A-Rated Sealed Units

Toughened or laminated glass options, argon-filled cavity, warm-edge (Super Spacer) bar, low-e coating. U-values from 1.2 W/m²K standard, 1.0 or lower on request.

Hardware

Yale, Hoppe and Mila multi-point locks, PAS 24 tested. Friction stays sized to sash weight so windows don't drop over time.

How we install

  • Every aperture is checked for square, plumb and level before manufacture — a 5mm out-of-square opening needs a bespoke frame, not a packed one.
  • Frames fixed with expanding frame fixings into brick or block, never nailed through the outer skin.
  • Low-modulus silicone externally so the seal moves with the building, expanding foam internally for insulation, no mastic bridging the DPC.
  • Trickle vents fitted to comply with Building Regs Part F unless proven whole-house ventilation exists.
  • Cills sealed at the ends and drainage slots kept clear so water leaves the frame instead of pooling.

Variations & options

Casement Windows

Side or top hung, single or multi-light. The default choice for most homes — flexible, secure and cost-effective.

Tilt & Turn

Inward opening. Ideal for cleaning upper floors from inside and for tall apertures where a normal casement would be awkward.

Sash-Style Windows

Slim-line sliding sash uPVC that keeps the look of a period property with the performance of modern glazing.

Bay & Bow Windows

Structurally reinforced with steel or aluminium jack posts and load-bearing corner mullions — critical on Victorian and Edwardian bays.

Georgian & Astragal Bars

Internal, external or through-pane bars in a range of widths to suit the period of the house.

Situations we typically fit this for

  • Full-house replacements on 1960s–1990s properties where original glazing has blown.
  • Bay window rebuilds where the existing frame is sagging or the sub-cill has rotted.
  • Conservation-sensitive areas where a heritage sash-style profile is needed.
  • Landlord EPC upgrades to move a property from an E or F band into C.
  • Extensions and loft conversions matched to existing window styles.

FAQs

uPVC Double Glazing — your questions answered

How much do uPVC double glazing windows cost in Chester?

+

Cost depends on the number of apertures, glass specification, colour and hardware, so we don't publish headline figures. You get a free survey and a written, itemised quote — no salespeople, no 'today only' discounts.

How long does installation take?

+

A typical 8–10 window job is 2–3 days on site with our team. Standard lead time from order to fit is around 3 weeks; bespoke colours or shaped windows are 4–5 weeks.

What guarantee comes with the windows?

+

10 years on the frames, 5 years on the sealed glass units and 1 year on ironmongery, all backed by an Insurance-Backed Guarantee through Assure that transfers if you sell the house.

Will the new windows meet Building Regs?

+

Yes. Every install is notified through Assure (Reg No. 1094), which is a Competent Persons Scheme — you get a compliance certificate for your paperwork without needing separate Building Control.

Can you match a specific colour or woodgrain?

+

Yes — Eurocell and Spectus both offer 20+ foil finishes including anthracite grey, black, chartwell green, cream, Irish oak and rosewood. Dual-colour (different inside/outside) is available too.

Do you fit windows on Victorian bays without them sagging?

+

Yes. Bays need structural reinforcement — usually a steel jack post or aluminium load-bearing mullion — which we design at survey stage. We won't fit a bay without proper support.

How long should new uPVC windows last?

+

20+ years on the frames when installed correctly and 15–20 on the sealed units before you'd expect any to blow. Hardware may need a service after 8–10 years.

Do I need to be home during installation?

+

For most of it, yes — mainly to let us in and to lock up. We work room by room so the house stays secure and weather-tight overnight.

Can you remove and dispose of my old windows?

+

Yes. Old frames, glass and packaging leave with us on the last day at no extra cost.

Do you offer emergency board-up if a window smashes?

+

For existing customers, yes — we'll get you weather-tight and secure quickly and price the replacement separately.
